Walmart is like the Catholic church of grocery stores. Most people know by now that it’s a really fucked up place, but that doesn’t stop them from going there out of convenience/comfort. Everybody loves to save a dollar/guarantee their way into heaven, even if it means stripping away farmer’s wages/stripping away the rights of others.
Religious comparisons aside, this infographic from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance paints a pretty unsettling image of how Walmart is affecting the economy and food industry. $1 out of every $4 spent on groceries in the U.S. goes right into the pockets of Walmart, and the big box grocery chain is well on track to take over more than one third of the market. Here are some more numbers on how the corporation is impacting food prices, farmer’s wages, and local economies.
